What is the cotton kingdom and how did it come about? How did this expansion of cotton growing affect the slave trade? What is the profitability issue and why is it important? How did slavery impact industrialization? How does slavery impact American politics prior to 1846? Discuss.
Question 2:
Some religions require their followers to accept a body of beliefs which they claim to be true, but for which there is no objective or empirical evidence. Do you think it is possible for someone to hold a scientific world view (those things that are true can be proven to be so with empirical, meaning evidence that can be readily observed), on one hand, and also believe in revealed truth (those things that cannot be proven, but are claimed to exist because of some supernatural power), on the other? Based on what you think of this question, provide a specific example of how science and faith cannot work together, OR an example of how both science and faith can work together. You example can be the work of a scientist (there are scientists who are great people of faith), a controversy, a historical situation etc.
